generally at work, having made contracts as in this section: one or two cases of pauperism existed there which were being provided for by the Board of Overseers of the County.

The Freedmens' Schools are doing very well; during the month, some seventy five entire suits of clothing, and a number of articles of that character, the contribution of Northern Societies, have been distributed under the direction of the Principal; some of these have been given gratuitously; others, in accordance with the wishes of the donors, have been sold at a nominal price, and the proceeds appropriated to the building and fitting up of the Church for the Freedmen; — the schools have been well conducted, and since their organization in this Sub Dist, have been very successful.

In regard to the operation of the Circular from Head Qrs of the Asst Commissioner, dated Mch 12th, 1866, I have to report that it was well received by the people generally; since that time five or six cases have been called up before the magistrate for minor offenses; principally for assault and battery, and for larceny; with one exception, the proceedings have been fairly conducted; due weight given to the testimony of the freed men and no disposition shown to act otherwise than as justice demanded; in the exception alluded to, I considered that the colored man was not dealt with fairly by the examining magistrate, and a report of the case was forwarded by your order direct to Richmond.

Very Respy,
Your Ob't Sev't,
F. S. Tukey
Asst Supt. Sub Dist "B."
