and a white man (Robert Whitehurst) was seen running followed by a large number of negroes. The former entered a house on Nicholson Str, and his pursuers quickly followed bursting in the door. Several pistols were now fired, and at this time Mrs. Whitehurst fell from a wound, evidently inflicted by her son, who in attempting to fire at the negroes was prevented by his mother, and in the struggle the pistol went off, taking effect as above described. The son then rushed through the house still followed by the crowd, who overtook him at or near Church Str. Here he was struck with clubs and stones, and badly bruised. Shaking himself free from his assailants he ran to one of the mounted Marshals and besought his protection. The horseman (Edward Long) promised to extend to him all the assistance in his power, and calling to his aid another Marshal, Whitehurst was taken between them, each having hold of an arm, and carried [[strikethrough]] him [[/strikethrough]] towards his horse. The crowd still closed in on them and several attempts were made to shoot the wounded man.
