whom the Mayor issued his warrant, and they were confined in jail on the charge of the murder of Robert Whitehurst and his mother.

On Monday the 23rd the Corporation Court met, and on Wednesday the first of the murder cases were reached, and James Hill a boy about 15 years of age, was placed at the bar. Two witnesses swore positively he was one of the men on horseback who had Whitehurst by the hand, though an alibi was clearly proven as well as the good character of the prisoner and he was discharged.

On Thursday William Sayles was assigned and but very slight evidence being brought against him and an alibi proven by six our eight witnesses, he also was released.

Edward Long was brought up on Friday and his examination was not concluded until Sunday at noon. Though but two witnesses identified him, and though one of these distinctly stated he was protecting Whitehurst, he was yet remanded for trial before the Circuit Court. He was afterwards released on a bail of five hundred dollars, there being but slight evidence
