against him, which bail was at once furnished and the prisoner allowed to go at large. I have since been informed by the Magistrates themselves, that four were in favor of this unconditional release, but that one vehemently opposed this, urging that the public demanded that some one should be sent on for trial; that there was a slight suspicion against him, and that if he was not guilty he could readily show it before a jury. His arguments prevailed so far as to induce two others to join him, and there being a majority the prisoner was remanded.

On Saturday afternoon the other prisoners John Wilson, Andrew Benson, James Pool and James Harvey were brought before the court. No evidence whatever was offered against the three first named, and but slight evidence against latter, they were all discharged and the court shorty after adjourned to the third Monday in May.

The above facts were gathered after a patient examination of all the witnesses in the case, every word of the direct examination being
