15. Thefts are not as numerous in the neighborhood of my farm as in some other parts of the County. I hear of some petty thefts occasionally, but none of any magnitude.
16. There have been one or two instances in the County in which white men were suspected of receiving the stolen goods, but a large majority of the thefts are committed by colored men who have not regular employment (day laborers) or those who are living on poor land and do not make a support.
17. Only a few.
18. Some of them are day laborers and do not work half the time. others are endeavoring to make crops of corn & oats and raise a few hogs.
19. They are generally very poor. and have but few comforts. Those who work by the month are much better provided for and are better cared for in sickness.
