conveniences of home I have paid to those in my [[strikethrough]][[?]][[/strikethrough]] employment a considerable amount of money since they obtained their freedom, and no one can perceive that they have added any thing to their former supply of family and house comforts, what the spend their money for, I do not know, but it must go for trifles of no real value, while at the same time I believe those who were formerly my slaves are more careful and provident than negroes are in general.

20th  Do you know of any disposition on the part of the Freedmen to emigrate to other parts.
Answer.  I do not.

21  Have they strong local attachments.
Ansr.  I think they have, much stronger than the white race.  I have always considered them as being much attached to their homes neighbourhoods and acquaintances, and if forced by circumstances to leave their old homes, they will generally return if in their power to do so.

22  What is the feeling between blacks and whites
Answer.  This is a difficult question to answer.  I suppose it is somewhat of a mixed character, but I think one of more mutual kindness than otherwise, I do not think there is much bitterness of feeling on the part of either, perhaps the whites are rather disposed to get their labor for less than it is worth, and the blacks are rather disposed to exact more than its real value which [[strikethrough]] and the there may be [[/strikethrough]] results in more feeling of distrust between the parties than there ought to exist.  This state of feelings proceeds in a measure from the ignorance of the Blacks, their want of knowledge about contracts, and the value of labour in general, they have little or no confidence in their own judgement as they have never been accustomed to think or provide for themselves, and they are consequently indecisive, fickle, and fearful of being deceived or cheated.
