contracts. There are a great many Freedmen in this locality who hire themselves out by the day.

There have been no cases tried before the Freedmen's Court at this station during the month. The Court was adjourned until further orders by Special Order No. 18. Bureau R.F. & A.L. Office of Supt 4th Dist Va Gordonsville Va May 11th 1866.

During the month I have made six Contracts between the Whites and the Freedmen, and each contract has been fully explained to the Freedmen before signing. I have registered the names of 1560 Freedmen who have been living together as man and wife previous to the 27th day of February 1866, and they appreciate the law having legalized their living together, as being married.

The state of feeling existing between the Whites and the Freedmen is good, no doubt occasioned by the presence of the Bureau, a feeling of general respect is growing strongly. I have not heard of any one Freedman in this Country being misused by the Whites, although there is evidently still existing a feeling against the United States Government, and I fear if the Bureau
