The freedmen are suspicious of the Civil Authorities, but believe implicitly what a "yankee officer tells them. They are indisposed to make contracts for any considerable length of time, alleging (& not without reason) that they cannot get their pay monthly & are not able to wait the will of their employers for payment.

The colored school numbers three hundred - an increase of sixty since last report.

Fewer rations have been issued than during the month of April.
