I have conversed with a great many of the freedmen, and have yet to find the One, who would be willing to be re-enslaved — and who does not Appreciate his freedom, however destitute his Condition, — altho', he may talk differently to his former master.

This feeling of suspicion toward the white people, and the effort to mask it beneath a deferential and obsequious behavior is universal, as far as I can learn, - It is a rude but complete system of free masonry — and its mysteries, safely locked in each breast, are transmitted, not by words or signs, but by Sympathy.

An alarm to their Common. Safety would be circulated with lightning rapidity, and not a ripple on the surface of black humanity would betray its existence.

Some white persons have told them (perhaps the better, to keep them in Subjection) that they were to be put into Slavery again. - In different parts of the country I have been met by freedmen, and asked this question — With expressions of their determination never to suffer such an outrage.

If there be any bad feeling on the part of the Whites towards the freedmen, it grows from "Political Excitement," — I often hear men of intelligence and good sense denouncing Social equality as if they were afraid of it, — and putting Constructions upon the Civil Rights bill, so absurd, that the most enthusiastic negro would hardly entertain them, All these angry discussions fasten the impression upon white people, that the blacks are seeking social equality, and feeds the black man with the hope of attaining it.

The order adjourning the freedman Court, was received May 15th 1866. Up to that time there were twenty one cases on the trial docket, and would have been as many more for the balance of the month.

I have tried to settle all difficulties that have arisen Since then, but have not Succeeded to my Satisfaction, and have appreciated the advantages
