One with horse stealing, and two with burglary Only two have been committed for hog stealing- which is a decrease in number from the [[strikethrough]] on previous [[/strikethrough]] preceding months.

I am satisfied that is the freedmen become better provided with food, and other necessaries, this evil will be almost entirely abated. 

I had not heard of a single instance of riot, or assault and battery, among the freedmen.

The number of paupers are decreasing. I had about twenty on my hands, at the beginning of the month, & they were very poorly provided for, I applied to Capt Barnes Supt 2d Dist to know what to do with them, as there was no provision made for them at the poor house [[?]] He ordered me to send them to the hospital Farmville (when I announced this to them if produced a general hegira.

All who were able to get away, could not be found when [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] I had secured transportation - and only ten were forwarded.

One man who has fallen into the fire in a fit, had one foot and both hands badly burned. He was brought here the day the day before the wagon started for Farmville, in a most shocking condition, - his hands and foot alive with maggots, yet when he heard that he was going to be sent to a hospital, he hobbled back to his home. Seven miles distant, to avoid being sent away. 

I afterwards sent him to Farmville, and he is since died.

Freedmen of both sexes have a strong aversion to the hospital or poor-house, and will suffer any privation  and misery I preference.

It was mainly on this anomalous  characteristic of the race, [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] that the overseers of the poor, in response to the proposition of the Asst Comr contained in Circular No 12 dated march 21st/66 agreed to take charge of Colored paupers from [[strikethrough]] on [[/strikethrough]] the 10th of June 1866.
