report of one outrage, where but for my interference, and threat of an appeal to the military authorities, a freedman & woman would have been driven from their homes & crops, by a band of ruffians. Their employer wanted their services, but no white man dare interfere in a case of that kind, for public opinion & that convincing argument of "highmind gentlemen," (the reveler) are against it. I trust that a different line of policy will yet be pursued in regard to freedmens affairs, if not then, their future is dark indeed.
