persons was upwards of one hundred dollars I think they will be able to build a moderate sized edifice this fall. The whole number of heads of families registered in the county is four hundred and forty seven and two hundred in Greene Co. where there is a school already established by Lt. Sweeny late Asst. Supt. of that county. The Freedmen in that county with the assistance of a northern benevolent society have repaired an old school house which with the land upon which it stands was deeded to the town of Manardsville in the year 1800. It having been unused since 1860 Lt. Sweeny took possesion [[possession]] of the property and repaired it, but the town of Manardsville have petitioned to have trustees appointed to take charge of the property the original trustees being dead. They state however that it is not done with any intention to break up the school but merely to secure their right to the property and the citizens profess themselves willing to remunerate the Freedmen for their outlay in repairs. The School is under the charge of two competant [[competent]] Lady teachers and the term closes about the middle of July next the average attendance is ninety pupils some of them living five miles from the school house.
