the passions and prejudices and habits of the old master are not dead.-

But my investigations as to public sentiment generally, in regard to the continuance of the Bureau have convinced me that a large proportion of the reflecting and substantial men in my district are not opposed to its continuance here- and no doubt would openly express themselves to that effect if they were convinced it would not be used against them by the politicians of the North.- Quite a number including several Magistrates have candidly expressed the hope that the Freedmen's Courts would be re-opened and the jurisdiction extended over all cases Civil and Criminal in which colored men are parties- This wish is general among the Freedmen- Several influential men have expressed the opinion that the restoration of the Courts was necessary for
