Jackson Oct 10/67

Dr Sir:

Your note concerning the freedman Mat Howard is just at hand. I sued him for money advanced to him beyond his wages, and the suit was decided against him on his own testimony - in fact he convicted himself of perjury in the cross examination. [[strikethrough]] If he [[/strikethrough]] He could have appealed from the magistrate's decision if he thought it was unjust. I have just arrived at home & cannot immediately lay my hands upon the memorandum or account book. I will see you in person about the matter — if you should be riding by my house this afternoon I would be glad if you would stop & see me. I have no horse or I would ride out this morning.

You will be perfectly satisfied of the rascality of Matt when you proceed to investigate the matter. In the meantime I would be glad to know if it is contemplated by the military to interfere in the judicial decisions of the county & open up a case for new trial which has already been decided.

You must excuse my pencil as I am just out of ink & await supply coming.
