NARA 234 Dry Grove Miss Decem 26 1867 Bureau R.F and A. Lands Jackson Miss. Yours of the 24 inst is at hand, & seeing that the case has not been correctly stated to you, I send this by the hand of my brother not being able to go myself. I rented my land to J. Dixon but Henry Franklin was taken in as a full partner, to pay half of the expenses & have one half of the crop, which can be proven. I was to fix the fence, but hired them to do it, I was to furnish them with things out of my store & be paid out of this crop, there was to be no lien or claim given to any other person than myself, as they told me they had money enough to get what I might not have These things were verbal but witnessed by several I knew the Statute of our State gave my claims the preference therefore I felt easy A. L Pope puts in a claim for supplies he never said anything to me & did not let them have much until the crop was made. I supplied them with tools to make the crop cloths & some provisions. [[strikethrough]] now [[/strikethrough]] I claim to be both Landlord & Merchant & that my claims must be paid first. Who has the best claims the man who furnishes land, tools, & things necessary to make a crop or one who advances a bill of supplies on a growing crop? Can a party who has been a partner come in & claim wages? & refuse to pay for tools & supplies? The question at issue now is Are my claims to be paid before A L. Popes or is he to have preference
