Little has been done, as yet, for the education of freed people; but time will probably work the desired results in this particular. Upon the whole I consider the condition of affairs as hopeful, giving promise of the future improvement of the colored population, and of early returning material prosperity. These impressions are beginning to gain ground with some of the former owners; and their hopes are based upon the unexpected sobriety, industry and goodsense manifested upon the part of their former slaves.
I have the honor to be,
Very Respectfully,
Your Obt. Servant
