I refered him to an extract of the laws of Va. and advised him to sue the party. Which he done and the party was made to pay the sum of $40.00, the full extent of the law.  Since that case came off, the citizens are more particular, and I don't think the courts are likely to have another case of that kind very soon.  Three cases of whipping were brought before the "Grand Jury" at the last Court which took place on the 21st inst. but as the parties complaining did not have sufficient evidence to have the parties complained of presented. This cases were dismissed.

The freedmen are doing well in this County and the white citizens are desirous to help them along when they behave themselves.
