In many cases the nearest Kin" of the orphan children are very old persons generally grandmothers grandfathers Aunts &c. who can but illy take care of themselves

Yet instead of allowing me to get the children good homes, they prefer to keep them themselves & will not give their consent to be parted from them — I believe many of the old people are wholly unfit to raise these orphans properly-

The feeling in some portions of my Sub Dist is quite unfavorable tword the establishment of schools they say if colored teachers can be had or white teachers from among them they could sustain it more cordially. but have a great amount of antipathy tword northern teachers — The great trouble is [[strikethrough]] in [[/strikethrough]] the utter impossibility of getting the Teachers boarded & proper school rooms a great deal of influence is brought to bear against the education of the Freedmen & none for it I consider it wholly impracticable & imprudent to establish schools too far away from the Hd Qrs of the Bureau, ie at present unless protection can be guarenteed by other
