during the month occurred on the 18th inst - the time of the County election.  The disturbance arose from an attempt of the civil authorities to arrest a colored man on the charge of disturbing the peace. He was handled pretty roughly by the whites, whose bitter feelings were doubly excited by whiskey, and the colored man fled to my office for protection, persued a mob of nearly two hundred men.  With what soldiers I had I protected him from the mob and on a warrant being [[?]] issued for his arrest.  I turned him over to the civil authorities. He was tried and bound in $50 to keep the peace, in default of which he was placed in jail, but has since been released - parties appearing for his good behavior.  

A company of the 12th Infantry is stationed here, which has a salutary influence - without them I think order could not be maintained, as the
