Many of the whites have advanced the idea of each community educating their own Freedmen in order to prevent the Yankee "influence of which they are jealous. The whites generally however do not take interest enough in the matter to take any steps to bring about such a result at present
A few months since several applications were made to me for the apprentices of orphan minor children of Freedmen but the parties declined entering into contracts that obliged them to educate such apprentices recently however these parties and others have expressed a desire to make such contracts and state their willingness to bind themselves to educate the orphan minors that are apprenticed to there
A large number of Freedmen in this sub dist. are desirous of availing themselves of the provisions of Circular no 7 Bureau Hd Qrs regarding homesteads but very few of them have means sufficient for support until they can make crops upon the new lands to which they remove and unless they receive some assistance after arriving
