And in regard to the introduction of schools for the freedmen, although some may quietly acknowledge the necessity for them, still, the following will illustrate the deep under current that exists. One of, if not the leading man of the County, says, that if a white male teacher were sent here, no one would board him, or associate with him; & if females were to be substituted, all the young men would it for granted they were whores, and would insult them on every occasion. The nephew of this man keeps one of the two Hotels here, & he it seems who made the first remark above. The Keeper of the other Hotel says he would have no objection to keeping [[strikethrough]]him[[/strikethrough]] the teacher provided his other boarders did not object; but he feels confident they would.

In conclusion, I desire to offer a few remarks on the injustice that may sometimes be done, by the binding out of children by the courts. In some instances it may degenerate into temporary slavery, under another name. It is at least a cheap way of getting a slave, from his sixth or seventh, and until he is twenty-one years. A white man can usually get a child bound to him, by representing; even should the parents be living, that it would probably fall as a burden on the County; the views of the Whites and blacks differ materially as to the capacity of the latter to take care of their children; and a child once bound, it is very difficult to get the court to reverse its action.
