I also find that while the Freedmen are generally employed, and earnestly striving to advance themselves by industry &c, the wives, influenced by foolish notions are idling away their time, and a large proportion of the children are growing up in idleness and absolute worthlessness. I have made every effort, embraced every opportunity to impress upon these people the fact that their wives and children must aid them, and will not be suffered to live in indolence. And while my advice and explanations were received in the kindest manner, & every assurance given that these evils should be abated, the fact still is evident and demonstrated daily, that a very large proportion of the colored women in this Country are by their course of [[?]]ing - absolutely clogging the advancement of the colored men.

Concerning the feeling of the Freedmen towards the whites, they continue to be respectful & obedient, and as a general thing are faithful to the obligations assumed and the employer seems to be indulgent and
