But it cannot be concealed that there is a marked absence of confidence to among the freedmen. They seem to be wearing a mask concealing sentiment known only to themselves. Of course this feeling is not openly manifested, but there is not that confidence which one at first glance would imagine did exist. This feeling of suspicion and distrust is gradually being overcome by those men who in their transactions with the freedmen act honorably. These people are extremely jealous of every movement affecting their common safety. Anything operating in this direction is rapidly transmitted from one to the other until in a marvellous short period the whole Colored is aroused. I am not sure but that this feeling of suspicion towards the white people is encouraged by a certain class of whites themselves.
