will have upon the Freedmen. I believe they will find it to their interest, to alter their line of conduct, and to treat their laborers with some degree of justice.

There are several Gentlemen in the County, who treat the Freedmen Kindly, and who regret the condition of affairs, but these gentlemen are by far in the minority. The "Roughs" are in the majority, and are the controlling element of Society in the County,

In Nottoway County, the condition of the Freedmen, is quite the reverse. they are nearly all at work, and but few have been drove off the plantations. they are generally contented with their present employers. and some of them are making contracts for the next year, on fair terms and with good prospects. The majority of the Citizens of this County require a strict fullfillment of their contracts, on the part of the Freedmen, and they themselves evince a disposition to perform their part faithfully,
