attached and some have purchased small lots of land upon which to erect houses of their own. The Whites generally do not approve of this and throw all the obstacles possible in the way of the Freedmen. but there are some who are willing to sell the Freedmen land or rent them cabins and many of the Whites are convinced that to make the labor of the Freedmen the most profitable is to rent their land to cultivate on shares. From present indication there will be some difficulty in the settlement for labor at Christmas as the Whites many of them are disposed to take advantage of the ignorance of the Freedmen in regard to their contracts and some have already tried to provoke the expiration of their contracts in order to have an excuse for not paying them but I think they will not meet with much success in this as the Freedmen ar shrewd enough to see the drift of such maneuvers and will put up with most any inconvenience
