100. C. Thurston Chase Genl Agent. American Union Mission Richmond, Va 27th May 1865. Requests rations for Teachers, persons engaged in the relief work, Soup house & distributing seeds- Endorsed Office Prv: Mar: Gen'l Dept of Virginia Richmond Va, May 27th/65 Respectfully forwarded to H'd Q'rs Dept of Va, for instructions signed W.R. Patrick Pro Mar Genl Head Quars Dept of Va May 29th 1865. The reestablishment of civil government and the great demand for labor in and around Richmond, furnishes the parents of colored children with means to support teachers, which they are doing in nearly every instance- I therefore have in every case of application for rations since the establishment of civil government, declined to begin issuance to teachers of colored or white children. I know of no facts from which I could deduce the same conclusions as stated by Gen'l Ord. but they compel me to differ from him in every particular C. Thurston Chase Gen'l Agent. C, 36st U.S.C.T. Fortress Monroe, Va 4 June 1865. States that his family are at Roanoke Island that the Government has ceased issuing rations to them- That when he enlisted it was promised the Government would care for his family. Endorsed H'd Q'rs 1st Brig 1st Div 25 AC on Board Transport Western Metropolis June 4th 1865 Respectfully forwarded - The colored soldiers recruited in this Department under Maj. Genl.
