It is absolutely necessary for the purpose indicated within to find a person who can read and write and has some knowledge of figures_ I know not where such a colored person can be had. B. 143, Requesting possession of his farm lying in Warwick Co &c Endorsed Newport News Va Aug 25th 1865 Respectfully referred to Capt A S Flagg✓ AQM Supt &c, said John Hawkins abandoned his farm a few days before the approach of the United States forces. leaving on his property a Son who afterwards died on the place early in the war, a large part of the farm is now leased by Freedmen. Robinson Lt & Asst Supt Office Supt 1st Dist of Va August 28th 1865 Respectfully forwarded [[erased]] to [[/erased]] and attention invited to endorsement of Lt Robinson Asst Supt &c (Sgd) A. S. Flagg Capt & AQM &c Richmond Va Aug 31st 1865 Respectfully returned to Capt Flagg who will report whether this applicant gave aid and encouragement to the rebellion. Also, whether he belongs to one of the excepted classes in President Johnson's Proclamation and if not whether he has taken the amnesty oath of May 29th 1865. By Command of Col. O. Brown (Sgd) C. H. Lacy [[Lacey]] Capt & AQM Lynchburg Va Aug 29, 1865 States that Freedmen are arriving in his Dist from Tennessee by Gov't transportation that they have no funds to pay their way to Richmond where they wish to go. Endorsed Richmond Va Aug 31st 1865 Respectfully forwarded to Maj Genl Howard with the recommendation that transportation be furnished for these persons to their respective homes and thus relieve the Gov't from their support.
