Staunton Va Sept 8th 1865
Respectfully returned. The facts as stated by Doctor Miller are true in every particular. I found six families numbering in all thirty six persons who previous to the war had comfortable little houses. Genl Sheridan's Army encamped near Newtown and completely destroyed the houses of these six families_ These colored persons own the lots on which the houses were situated. They are now living in houses which they have rented - but they will be obliged to leave them in a short time as the whites who own them are coming back to occupy them. Dr Miller estimates that $1200, will rebuild the six houses, with houses provided for these people they will be able to support themselves and if not most of them will probably have to be supported by the Government during the coming winter

Unclear: Capt [[Recsling]] Pro Wm [[Recsling]] Provot Believe last letter of that name is a "z" ---------- Reopened for Editing 2024-03-14 09:49:10 Added missing text and corrected punctuation. ---------- Reopened for Editing 2024-03-14 10:59:42 Please transcribe page numbers as they appear in the location of the text. One page number per page, rather than all page numbers at the beginning of the first page. ---------- Reopened for Editing 2024-03-14 20:27:56 I disagree with inserting a page number into the middle of a body of text, when it is just as easy to recognize it as a page number when positioned at the top of the transcription next to the other page number. The goal is supposed to be about readability of the transcription!
