unpopular to the taxpayers of the Co. and the whites, very generally have petitioned Governor Pierpont, also the judge of the circuit court to have the levy set aside, but owning to informality of proceedings on part of the petitioners it has not been done and it has served only to delay until the present time the collection of the tax — but it is to be delayed no longer. The Freedmen feel its unjustness, yet they will make no opposition to its collection — as many of the whites swear they (themselves) will do.

There are no schools in this Sub dist at present — the two schools that have been in session during the summer in Mathews  Co. have suspended — through no fault however of the parents or scholars, for they are anxious to have schools and have their children educated.
