This woman by my advice consulted a Lawyer, who told her to apply to Mr Bernard, J.P. for a warrant to get her things & whether she succeeded or not to see him again, in order that he might bring suit for further redress. Mr Bernard, however, said, as it was not in his district, he could do nothing but directed her to some other magistrate, since when I have heard nothing further from her.

This is the same Foster I made mention of in my Last Report in compliance with Circular No. 10, who obtaining a warrant for an illegal claim of 26$ rent against "Harkless Harris" freedman levied upon and took away all the property he possessed, nothing of which but what was exempt by law from levy, leaving his Wife and children not even a bed to lie on; &c.

This same man last August, while Lt. Warden was here, likewise beat another freedwoman, named "Matilda Frances" very severely.
