to fill his office, and the matter of indicting them has recently even been spoken off by the whites.- Apropos of this - although colored persons are now admitted I have been told, that at a meeting of the Board of Overseers last June, it was decided against the Law to have colored people in the Poor House & those that were then there were given three days food and sent away.

The following circumstances, though of a different subject nature, if it has not before been reported may likewise be of interest. I also understand that [[strikethrough]]las[[/strikethrough]] on one of the Court days last spring, the young men here getting together drove out of the village all the Negroes that did not belong in it.

In my Report on the school question I stated that from a series of meetings holden here it was ascertained that a monthly sum of about $20.00 could be realized by subscription among the colored people in the surrounding neighborhood, which would go towards defraying the minor expenses of a school at this place. By my direction, a President, and Treasurer or "Cashier" have since been elected and a kind of "Colored School Association" formed. A regular Case Book has been opened, which I keep holing the Treasurer or "Cashier" accountable for the funds received. It will be remembered, I also remarked that these people should not however be depended on too implicitly even for the above amt. for although they had every disposition to do all they possibly could, still the realization of ready means with them was a matter of great uncertainty &c.
