a cause, or pretense for remark on the part of the whites, to the injury, perhaps of the colored people or their cause in view, I have studiously refrained from being present at any of their meetings; nevertheless, I understand it is currently reported throghout the County, that I am holding & being present at meetings of the Negroes addressing, reading papers to them & striving to instigate them against the whites. In conjunction with this, it has several times been intimated to me, through well disposed (white) sources, that in riding through the County I may sometime be "picked off"; for - it is said - there are those in the County who, were it not for fear of being apprehended, would only be too quick to do such a deed.
