convinced of now.  The male portion of the freedpeople in a great majority of cases are able by using the proper industry and economy to cloth themselves and provide food, but there are a number of old and infirm that cannot clothe themselves comfortably and provide food during the Winter.

No actual suffering has occurred that I am aware of but I think that there will be, although the civil authorities have established poor houses where the Colored population are cared for without distinction race or color

The freed people having an utter abhorance to go in to the poor house, they would rather suffer than go their although they would be well fed and clothed if they did. (I mean those who are not able to work and earn a living)

There are quite a number of Women and Children and the number is constantly increasing the Women have no husbands but have large families of young children
