the affair & ascertaining the amount of crop raised I gave Mr Wade a statement of the amount he ought to pay said Peebles for himself & family to be in keeping with what others are paying their laborers where engaged for one forth (1/4) of the crops, where they are dealing justly. Also stating that I would allow for all the cloth & shoes, he had furnished the family of said Peebles (colored) what the same in quality could be purchased for at any store in the county
This he (Wade) positively refuses to accept, and is still holding the entire crop. All that he is willing to pay said Peebles (colored) is four (4) bbls corn out of 112 bbls the amt. raised and other crops in like proportion. It is a complete plan to swindle this freedmen out of his whole year's labor & that of his family. There is no justice in the course pessued [[persued]] by said Wade whatever, for by it the said Robt Peebles colored & family will not receive hardly anything for their labor for the entire year
Very Respectfully
