In fact the tone of their conversations, deportment &c all indicate that they comprehend their condition more clearly than ever and that they must become a self supporting people. They now anticipate that the Government will protect them in their rights and property but consider themselves responsible for the maintenance of their families and those dependent upon them. Although they are a poverty stricken people and barely able to live comfortably from their earnings yet no applications are made for charity excepting by that class who are absolutely incapable of providing for themselves either by reason of disease infirmity or old age. The proportion of colored paupers, in [[any condition?]] it bears very honorable comparison
