On the part of the colored people, there is a strong propensity to change. Those who cropped land this year, are seeking employment by the year, and those who worked by the year, are anxious to crop. All seem to prefer engagements from month to month, and many are declining to engage themselves by the year, in the hope that they will be employed by the month. But as yet, so far as my knowledge extends, very few contracts have been made. The farmers are not disposed to hire, except by the year.

I have the honor to be,
Very respectfully,
