the expressed idea of the whites that the "Negro won't work". My impression is from close observation, that most all classes of men white and black have been obliged to work this year in order to prepare for their own comfort & that of their families.

A much higher rate of wages will be demanded by the Freedmen the coming year, than was paid this — and it will be given by the farmers. The freedmen have become more intelligent upon this point and will insist upon an increase of remuneration for their services hereafter.

The Freedmens Schools at this place & [[strikethrough]] Culpeper [[/strikethrough]] Orange Co Va have been successfully prosecuted up to the commencement of "the Holly Days" at the expiration of the same the teachers will resume their duties - owing to the bad weather during the month I have been unable to have the new building completed at this place for school purposes.  I hope however to have it completed in a few days.
