Society which has for its object the relief of the suffering poor. They are making great efforts to assist all in needy circumstances. They are encouraged and aided in this work by the Bureau as far as practicable  The results of this association and their efforts are very beneficial  The Freedmen of the county and cities are not taxed for the support of the poor and this is used by the authorities as an excuse for not making better provisions for their Support.

The relief form the Bureau has been rendered in the Hospitals them being one General Hospital and two Small Pox Hospitals in the county  The two latter being for the accommodation of each city respectively.  Assistance has been given to (22) twenty two in the Freedmens Hospital of Norfolk. In the Small Pox Hospital of Norfolk (15) fifteen and in the Small Pox Hospital of Portsmouth(21)twenty one during the last month.  whole number of Rations issued to destitutes in Hospitals (1976) Rations issued to employees in county and city 389  Much interest is manifest in the Schools & the are well attended and making good progress, The state of feeling seems improving in
