working for it, however, and may yet succeed. Arrangements for labor are being made for the ensuing year on the same terms as were made for 1866, viz: part of the crop; generally the crop is to be equally divided between the employer and laborers, or if the employer furnishes all the team and implements, one fourth is given to the laborers. Cash wages are not satisfactory to a majority of the hands, because nearly all of them are encumbered with wife and children and when the cost of feeding the whole family is deducted from the value of the labor of this man, very little remains to be paid in money, and no farmer will allow them to work for him and live on his land without feeding them and making the necessary deduction. The greatest hatred and contempt are held by the whites in this vicinity towards the National Congress which now since there is no prospect of obtaining political power by keeping silent, are expressed in the plainest terms.
