Some of them work to advantage, particularly Mechanics, who have a surplus, after providing for themselves and families - but quite a number receive barely sufficient to supply them with suitable food and clothing.
In regard to the workings of the Bureau, it is exerting a healthful influence throughout the community, - and has been successful in the settlement of many differences, between the Freedmen and the whites - numerous claims for wages have been satisfactorily adjusted.
In conclusion I would state that no cases of abuse or cruel treatment have come to my notice.
