of the Asst. Supt. to get them to act at all.

There is great demand for schools for colored children and adults, too, in this Sub Dist, for there is not one within its limits. There was a teacher for Freedmen here in the early part of last year, sent out by the New York Freedmen's Aid Society, but he was persecuted until at last compelled to close his school & leave. He received no encouragement, whatever from the people, but on the contrary prejudice ran high against him and his school.

In the education of the Freedmen and that rapidly, lies the only hope of their future safety & prosperity.

Very Respectfully
Your obt servant
F.M. Kimball
Lt & Asst Supt
