soon after to satisfy the land tax on the estate. On the day of sale, I, in order to prevent the sale, by great exertions raised the money and paid the tax amounting to $51.52 which ought to have been paid by Hawley. This act was done I firmly believe because I was a Union man (or Yankee as more commonly called). Some of the better class of citizens told me that if I had been a Southern man the Sherriff would not have levied on my property. There are many instances of the citizens trying to do me harm by acts of meanness almost too small to notice and I believe that a jury in this county would not do justice to a Northern or (union) man if they could possibly avoid it.
