desirous for them to get property, as it causes them to remain in the neighborhood, labor being always in demand Good crops of vegetables, such as Potatoes, Turnips &c. have been raised the past year on their own account, and instances have been brought to my notice of colored people donating such articles to the poor whites

For this year, able bodied men are receiving from a hundred and twenty to a hundred and fifty dollars per year, with a Cabin, garden, & firewood. Man, wife, & one to three children, a hundred and fifty to a hundred and seventy five dollars, with Cabin, garden and pasture for Cow and two Hogs. House servants, fifty to Sixty dollars pr year and found. A man working a farm on shares is to receive 1/3rd of the crop, which is twenty five acres of corn and fifty acres of wheat, the owner of the land furnishing team and implements, if more ground is seeded than this the owner must furnish the extra help, and so on in proportion. Men working by the day receive seventy five cents to a dollar and a half. One dollar pr cord for cutting wood, and one dollar pr hundred for rails, timber at the stump. I heard no complaints about pay. It is unfortunate that the children of the farm hands are growing up in ignorance. Time can only remedy this misfortune, as the whites in some Districts refuse to establish free schools for their own children. This information is gained by visiting in person the farms in this vicinity. Accompanying Reports of Schools &c will be found herewith All of which is respectfully submitted
