farm hands and from the appearance of things now, many will not be able to cultivate their farms during the present year.

I have tried to induce the freedmen to labor by the month or on shares but they persist in going to themselves (as they call it) which accounts for the great scarcity of labor in this section.

I am in hopes that by the 1st of April that many who are now idling about will be brought their senses, and have to go to work.  No suffering has occurred among them during this month and nearly all seem to doing very well.
