a severe and necessary lesson to them, and fruitful of good results.  I cannot say that I sympathize with them in their loss, by reason of several employers driving off their laborers, without any compensation for their services, I am not compelled to issue rations and clothing to the families of some of these laborers, and their number is constantly increasing.

I have just completed a School for Freedmen at this place, at a cost of $200. and I propose to build two more in this Sub District. As a general rule, the citizens are opposed to these Schools, but I have ascertained that their prejuidices [[prejudices]] may be easily overcome by paying a liberal price for the School site and building materials. The Freedmen exhibit a commendable desire to educate their children and themselves and I believe they are gradually improving both in morals and intelligence.
