When at the County Seat I ascertained that there were no prisoners in jail except Freedpeople they being chiefly held for petty offences - principally "[[hog?]] Stealing" - so far as I saw the evidence on which they were tried was entirely circumstantial. The "Poor Whites" as they are termed generally swear to some tracks of blood, or measurement of foot-prints.

Freedpeople are very anxious to have schools established and their complaint that they have been neglected while schools have been established on all sides of them seems to be but the truth; so far, I have been unable to obtain a suitable room for the purpose; not that there are none, but the whites are opposed to the establishment of Schools.
