country, are looked upon as renegades and traitors. I will refer to one instance, to show the contempt the leading men have for such persons. During the last term of the quarterly court of this county, the sheriff summonsed a man as a juror who is knowen to be a Union man, and a competent juror by law. On his taking a seat as such, the Commonwealth attorney called the sheriff and told him that he must take that man off the jury without assigning any cause (the prisoner before the court was a colored man).

The freedmens school teachers at this place are continually insulted by being called hard names, &c by white citizens of this place, one of them is a lawyer named John Thurman, who I think also gave information to the Grand Jury of a little difficulty that occured between one of the teachers and a colored man for correcting his child for a violation of the rules of school. This man behaved very badly, in the school house and the teacher threw him out. All the parties were sent for, for the purpose of presenting the teacher. The whole was done for ridicule.
