oppression to the Freedmen during the month, it is only the fear of punishment, however that keeps some of the whites from oppressing the Freedmen in every possible way. There are however some of the whites who are well disposed and treat the Freedman in a proper manner.

The state of Feeling existing between the Whites and the Freedmen is not very good, owing to the fact of the Whites being disposed to take the advantage of the Freedmen. The Freedmen are as a general thing, willing to work and maintain their families, still there are some who will not work if they can help it. Very few Contracts are being made this year, the Freedmen preferring to work by the month or day, thereby obtaining better pay and preventing any imposition on them. The schools are well attended and the Freedmen, both adults and children, evince a great desire to learn. There are at present four schools in the Sub District.

I am very respectfully
Your obedient Servant
