operation of existing laws &o. — I daily hear the most flattering things said of the conduct of the colored race during the war and none are most enthusiastic in praising them for their order quietness - fidelity, good behavior &c than these distinguished gentlemen who aspire to seats either in the Convention or Congress — It is I must confess somewhat remarkable that facts which have challenged the administration of the civilized world for several years should only have become known to these highly educated people after the colored man had become elevated to the rights and privileges of the citizen.

On the other hand I must say I am surprised at not only the intelligence shown but the anxiety manifested by these people upon whom the subject of elections — They seem to be determined to be influenced by our considerations but those calculated to restore peace and quietness to the people and which will promote the intents of the government.
