This instrument of writing is to protect Peter Taylor and family from any interference by the Civil Authorities of Newton County, Miss. on account of the charge of "Vagrancy". He having satisfied this Office that he is properly engaged in obtaining a livelihood for himself and such members of his family as may be with him.

In having been represented at this Office that you have forcibly deprived a freedman by the name of Bob Crawford, of the possession of about Thirty barrels of corn, the property of the said Crawford without due process at law, and that you are now in possession of a note extorted from the said Crawford by threats and intimidation by you, on account of a charge made by you that the said Crawford had killed four of your hogs, that some part of the proceeds derived from the sale of Crawford's share of Cotton, raised on Mr Ezeikel Daniels place in the year 1867, has been paid to you on account of said note without any legal process. You are hereby notified that the whole transaction concerning the note, and the arbitration and payment thereof, is declared null and void. And, besides, all the persons connected with this nefarious scheme of swindling and robbery of this poor black man's hard earned property are liable and amenable under the laws of the State of Miss. also to the United States under an Act entitled

"An Act to protect all persons in the United States in their civil rights and furnish the means of their vindication," passed by the Congress of U.S. Apr 9" 1866.
 
You are hereby commanded to restore to Bob Crawford (freedman) in good condition and full quantity all articles of produce you have taken from him, and the full amount of money received from any source or account of paid note, together with the note, within ten days from this date and report compliance with this order to this Office, either by letter or otherwise. 

In the event of your failing to comply with this order, you will be arrested and tried before a U S Court. It is expected you will see the propriety of compliance, and thereby avoid yourself the punishment you so rightly deserve

You are hereby informed that the decision as rendered by a board of Arbitration composed of T.C. Tibbs, and one Page, in the case concerning a note extorted from Bob Crawford (freedman) by Josiah McCarter, having been represented at this Office, the same has been declared unlawful and unjust and is therefore set aside, and conformity thereto prohibited.

You will therefore proceed without delay to settle, in a satisfactory manner with Bob Crawford for the amount derived from the proceeds of his share of the
